1. to bear; to carry (on one's back or shoulders); to take responsibility for

   这笔损失由公司负担。 zhèbǐ sǔnshī yóu gōngsī fùdān — The company will bear this loss.

2. to turn one's back on; to abandon; to renounce

   他不应该负朋友的信任。 tā bù yīnggāi fù péngyǒu de xìnrèn — He shouldn't betray his friends' trust.

3. to be defeated; to lose (a contest, war, game)

   在那场决赛中，我们队负于对手。 zài nàchǎng juésài zhōng wǒmen duì fùyú duìshǒu — In that final, our team lost to the opponent.

4. negative (mathematics, electrical charge, etc.)

   这个数是负数。 zhège shù shì fùshù — This number is negative.
