读 — dú

1. to read out; to read aloud

   请把这段文字读出来。 qǐng bǎ zhèduàn wénzì dúchūlái — Please read this passage out loud.

2. to read (silently or for comprehension)

   他每天晚上读书一小时。 tā měitiānwǎnshàng dúshū yī xiǎoshí — He reads for one hour every night.

3. to attend (school)

   他在北京读大学。 tā zài běijīng dú dàxué — He attends university in Beijing.

4. to study (a subject at school)

   她在学校读法律专业。 tā zài xuéxiào dú fǎlǜ zhuānyè — She studies law at school.

5. to pronounce; to articulate (a character or word)

   老师教我们怎么读这个汉字。 lǎoshī jiào wǒmen zěnme dú zhège hànzì — The teacher is teaching us how to pronounce this character.

读 — dòu

1. comma; (a) phrase marked by a pause

   古文中的句读分明，阅读更清楚。 gǔwén zhōng de jùdòu fēnmíng yuèdú gèng qīngchǔ — In classical texts, sentence breaks and pauses are clear, making reading easier.
