说 — shuō

1. to speak; to talk

   他说了很多。 tā shuō le hěnduō — He said a lot.

2. to say; to state

   他说他明天会来。 tā shuō tā míngtiān huìlái — He said he will come tomorrow.

3. to explain; to interpret

   老师把这个问题说得很清楚。 lǎoshī bǎ zhège wèntí shuō dé hěn qīngchǔ — The teacher explained this question very clearly.

4. to comment; to remark

   他对那件事一直有很多话要说。 tā duì nàjiànshì yìzhí yǒu hěnduō huà yàoshuō — He has had a lot to say about that matter.

5. to scold; to tell off

   妈妈把他说了一顿，因为他迟到。 māmā bǎ tā shuō le yīdùn yīnwèi tā chídào — Mom scolded him because he was late.

6. (bound form) theory; doctrine

   这是儒家很重要的一种说。 zhè shì rújiā hěn zhòngyào de yīzhǒng shuō — This is an important Confucian doctrine.

1. to persuade

   我花了很久才把他说服了。 wǒ huā le hěnjiǔ cái bǎ tā shuōfú le — It took me a long time to persuade him.
