话筒 — huàtǒng

1. microphone; megaphone (device that converts or amplifies voice)

   他说话时拿着话筒，声音清晰地传到了台下。 tā shuōhuà shí ná zhe huàtǒng shēngyīn qīngxī dì chuándào le táixià — He held the microphone while speaking, and his voice reached the audience clearly.

2. telephone receiver; handset (the part of a phone you hold to speak/listen)

   电话响了，我拿起话筒接了电话。 diànhuàxiǎng le wǒ náqǐ huàtǒng jiē le diànhuà — The phone rang; I picked up the handset and answered.

3. fig. mouthpiece; spokesperson (a person or organization that speaks for others)

   在这次事件中，公司被指责只当了政府的‘话筒’。 zài zhècì shìjiàn zhōng gōngsī bèi zhǐzé zhǐdāng le zhèngfǔ de huàtǒng — In this incident the company was accused of being merely a government mouthpiece.
