1. to curry favor with; to win someone's approval by fawning

   他总是讨好老板，希望能得到提拔。 tā zǒngshì tǎohǎo lǎobǎn xīwàng néng dédào tíbá — He is always currying favor with the boss, hoping to get promoted.

2. to achieve the desired or fruitful outcome (to pay off)

   这次准备很充分，终于讨好了，效果非常好。 zhècì zhǔnbèi hěn chōngfèn zhōngyú tǎohǎo le xiàoguǒ fēicháng hǎo — The preparations were thorough and finally paid off; the result was very good.
