认定 — rèndìng

1. to determine/establish (a fact); to conclude (often in legal or official contexts)

   法院认定被告有罪。 fǎyuàn rèndìng bèigào yǒuzuì — The court determined that the defendant was guilty.

2. to believe firmly; to be convinced of; to maintain (that something is true)

   他认定自己没有错，坚持了很久。 tā rèndìng zìjǐ méiyǒu cuò jiānchí le hěnjiǔ — He was convinced he was not wrong and persisted for a long time.

3. to set one's mind on; to decide firmly on (a course of action)

   她认定要出国留学，开始准备申请材料。 tā rèndìng yào chūguó liúxué kāishǐ zhǔnbèi shēnqǐngcáiliào — She decided she would study abroad and began preparing her application materials.
