要命 — yàomìng

1. to cause someone's death; to kill (cause death)

   这场大病差点要命，幸亏手术做得及时。 zhèchǎng dàbìng chàdiǎn yàomìng xìngkuī shǒushù zuò dé jíshí — The illness almost cost him his life; fortunately he was treated in time.

2. extremely; terribly (colloquial intensifier)

   今天热得要命。 jīntiān rè dé yàomìng — It's awfully hot today.

3. (expressing complaint) to be a nuisance; to be exasperating

   这台电脑老出问题，真要命。 zhè tái diànnǎo lǎo chū wèntí zhēnyàomìng — This computer keeps having problems — it's really a pain.
