补 — bǔ

1. to repair; to mend; to patch (damage to an object)

   妈妈给我补了破了的袜子。 māmā gěi wǒ bǔ le pò le de wàzi — Mom mended my torn socks.

2. to make up for (a deficiency, loss, or mistake)

   他加班来补他错过的工作时间。 tā jiābān lái bǔ tā cuòguò de gōngzuò shíjiān — He worked overtime to make up for the time he missed.

3. to fill (a vacancy); to take a place temporarily

   她被临时补上了经理的职位。 tā bèi línshí bǔshàng le jīnglǐ de zhíwèi — She was temporarily appointed to fill the manager's position.

4. to supplement; to add something extra (to make up a shortfall)

   公司发奖金来补员工收入的不足。 gōngsī fā jiǎngjīn lái bǔ yuángōng shōurù de bùzú — The company gives bonuses to supplement employees' insufficient income.
