虚 — xū

1. emptiness; void

   道家讲究虚和实的关系。 dàojiā jiǎngjiū xū hé shí de guānxì — Taoism emphasizes the relationship between emptiness and substance.

2. abstract theory or guiding principles

   这个学派注重理论上的虚与形式。 zhège xuépài zhùzhòng lǐlùn shàng de xū yǔ xíngshì — This school emphasizes abstract theory and form.

3. empty or unoccupied (space, seat, place)

   教室里还有几个虚位等待报到。 jiàoshì lǐ háiyǒu jǐgè xūwèi děngdài bàodào — There are still a few unoccupied places in the classroom awaiting registration.

4. diffident or timid

   他胆子有点虚，不太敢在众人面前讲话。 tā dǎnzi yǒudiǎn xū bù tài gǎn zài zhòngrén miànqián jiǎnghuà — He is a bit timid and doesn't dare speak in front of crowds.

5. false; not genuine

   他说的话有点虚，不能完全相信。 tā shuō dehuà yǒudiǎn xū bùnéng wánquán xiāngxìn — What he said is a bit hollow; you can't fully trust it.

6. humble or modest

   他做人很虚，从不夸耀自己的成就。 tā zuòrén hěn xū cóng bù kuāyào zìjǐ de chéngjiù — He is humble and never boasts about his achievements.

7. (of health) weak; feeble

   他最近身体有点虚，多休息就会好。 tā zuìjìn shēntǐ yǒudiǎn xū duō xiūxī jiù huì hǎo — He's been a bit weak lately; more rest will help.

8. virtual (e.g., virtual reality, virtual effect)

   这款游戏有很强的虚拟现实效果。 zhèkuǎn yóuxì yǒu hěn qiáng de xūnǐxiànshí xiàoguǒ — This game has strong virtual reality effects.

9. in vain; to no avail

   你白忙一场，都是虚的。 nǐ báimáng yīcháng dōu shì xū de — Your efforts were in vain; it was all for nothing.
