落 — là

1. to leave out; to be missing; to forget to bring or leave behind

   我把钥匙落在家里了。 wǒ bǎ yàoshi luò zài jiālǐ le — I left the keys at home.

2. to lag behind; to fall behind (in schedule, progress)

   他在学习上落了很大一截。 tā zài xuéxí shàng là le hěndà yījié — He has fallen far behind in his studies.

落 — luò

1. to fall; to drop

   树上的苹果落了下来。 shùshàng de píngguǒ là le xiàlái — The apples on the tree fell down.

2. (of the sun) to set; (of a tide) to go out; to sink or decline

   太阳快要落山了。 tàiyáng kuàiyào luòshān le — The sun is about to set.

3. to rest on; to fall onto; to remain with

   责任最后落在他身上。 zérèn zuìhòu luò zài tā shēnshàng — The responsibility ultimately fell on him.

   这次比赛他落了个亚军。 zhècì bǐsài tā là le gè yàjūn — He ended up taking second place in this contest.

   请在合同末尾落下你的名字。 qǐng zài hétóng mòwěi làxià nǐ de míngzì — Please write your name at the end of the contract.

6. whereabouts; settlement; place where something is located

   那批文物的下落至今仍是个谜。 nà pī wénwù de xiàluò zhìjīn réng shì gè mí — The whereabouts of those artifacts remain a mystery to this day.
