1. vegetable; greens

   买一些新鲜的菜。 mǎi yīxiē xīnxiān de cài — Buy some fresh vegetables.

2. a (prepared) dish; course

   今晚我做三个菜。 jīnwǎn wǒ zuò sāngè cài — I'll make three dishes tonight.

3. weak; poor (in ability or quality)

   他的中文很菜，还在练习。 tā de zhōngwén hěn cài hái zài liànxí — His Chinese is poor; he's still practicing.

4. (colloquial) someone's type (of person they like)

   她说我不是她的菜。 tā shuō wǒ búshì tā de cài — She said I'm not her type.
