臭 — chòu

1. stench; bad odor

   房间里有一股臭味。 fángjiān lǐ yǒu yīgǔ chòuwèi — There is a bad smell in the room.

2. smelly; smelling bad

   垃圾桶很臭，快扔掉吧。 lājītǒng hěn chòu kuài rēngdiào ba — The trash can is very smelly; throw it away.

3. to smell (bad)

   这鱼放久了，开始臭了。 zhè yú fàng jiǔ le kāishǐ chòu le — This fish was left too long and has started to smell.

4. repulsive; loathsome; (informal) terrible, awful

   他做事太臭了，谁也不愿意帮忙。 tā zuòshì tài chòu le shuí yě bù yuànyì bāngmáng — He behaves so badly that nobody wants to help.

5. severely; ruthlessly (colloquial intensifier)

   这场比赛他被打得臭惨了。 zhèchǎng bǐsài tā bèi dǎdé chòu cǎn le — He was soundly beaten in that match.

6. dud (ammunition); defective round

   那颗子弹是臭的，没打着目标。 nà kē zǐdàn shì chòu de méi dǎzhe mùbiāo — That round was a dud; it didn't hit the target.

臭 — xiù

1. sense of smell; olfaction

   老人的嗅觉（臭）已经减弱了。 lǎorén de xiùjué chòu yǐjīng jiǎnruò le — The old man's sense of smell has already weakened.

2. to smell (be smelly) — alternate pronunciation

   这条鱼好像有点儿臭。 zhè tiáoyú hǎoxiàng yǒudiǎnér chòu — This fish seems to smell a bit (bad).
