1. to employ; to hire; to appoint (someone to a post)

   公司今天聘了一位新的市场经理。 gōngsī jīntiān pìn le yīwèi xīn de shìchǎng jīnglǐ — The company hired a new marketing manager today.

2. (bound form) to betroth (used in compounds)

   古代常有聘礼作为订婚的标志。 gǔdài chángyǒu pìnlǐ zuòwéi dìnghūn de biāozhì — In ancient times, betrothal gifts were often a sign of engagement.

3. (colloquial) (of a woman) to get married; to be married off

   她去年聘了，现在有孩子了。 tā qùnián pìn le xiànzài yǒu háizi le — She got married last year and now has children.

4. (literary) to visit another state as an envoy on a diplomatic mission

   春秋时期，诸侯常派使者聘于邻国以求同盟。 chūnqiūshíqī zhūhóu cháng pài shǐzhě pìn yú línguó yǐqiú tóngméng — In the Spring and Autumn period, vassals often sent envoys to neighboring states to seek alliances.
