翻 — fān

1. to turn over; to flip; to overturn

   他把书翻了过来。 tā bǎ shū fān le guòlái — He flipped the book over.

2. to rummage through; to search by turning over things

   狗把垃圾桶翻得乱七八糟。 gǒu bǎ lājītǒng fāndé luànqībāzāo — The dog rummaged the trash can all over.

3. to translate; to render into another language; to decode

   她负责把外文材料翻成中文。 tā fùzé bǎ wàiwén cáiliào fānchéng zhōngwén — She is responsible for translating foreign materials into Chinese.

4. to double; to multiply by two; to increase twofold

   利润在一年内翻了一番。 lìrùn zài yīnián nèi fānleyīfān — Profits doubled within a year.

5. to climb over or into; to cross; to get over (an obstacle)

   孩子们在墙上翻来翻去玩耍。 háizi men zài qiángshàng fānláifānqù wánshuǎ — The children were climbing over the wall back and forth playing.
