缩 — suō

1. to withdraw; to pull back

   敌军见势不妙，开始缩回阵地。 díjūn jiànshìbùmiào kāishǐ suōhuí zhèndì — The enemy, seeing the situation was bad, began to pull back their positions.

2. to contract; to shrink (in size)

   洗过几次后，这件毛衣会缩小一些。 xǐguò jǐcì hòu zhèjiàn máoyī huì suōxiǎo yīxiē — After being washed a few times, this sweater will shrink a bit.

3. to reduce (amount, extent); to cut down

   公司决定缩减开支以度过难关。 gōngsī juédìng suōjiǎn kāizhī yǐ dùguònánguān — The company decided to reduce expenses to get through the difficulty.

4. abbreviation; to abbreviate

   在注释中常用缩写来节省空间。 zài zhùshì zhōng chángyòng suōxiě lái jiéshěng kōngjiān — Abbreviations are often used in annotations to save space.
