缘分 — yuánfèn

1. fate or chance that brings people together; a serendipitous meeting

   我们能在这儿相遇真是有缘分。 wǒmen néng zài zhèér xiāngyù zhēnshì yǒuyuánfēn — It's really fate that we could meet here.

2. predestined affinity or relationship (often used for friendships or romances)

   他们俩好像有缘分，认识不久就成了好朋友。 tāmen liǎ hǎoxiàng yǒuyuánfēn rènshí bùjiǔ jiù chéng le hǎo péngyǒu — They seem to have a predestined affinity; they became good friends shortly after meeting.

3. (Buddhist) destiny; karma that determines encounters and relationships

   在佛教里，缘分常被用来解释生命中的相遇与别离。 zài fójiào lǐ yuánfēn cháng bèi yònglái jiěshì shēngmìng zhòng de xiāngyù yǔ biélí — In Buddhism, yuánfèn is often used to explain the meetings and partings in life.
