编 — biān

1. to weave; to plait (questions of textiles, hair, baskets)

   她会把头发编成很多小辫子。 tā huì bǎ tóufā biānchéng hěnduō xiǎobiànzi — She can braid her hair into many small plaits.

2. to organize; to arrange; to group (people or items)

   老师把学生编成四个小组去讨论问题。 lǎoshī bǎ xuéshēng biānchéng sìgè xiǎozǔ qù tǎolùn wèntí — The teacher divided the students into four groups to discuss the questions.

3. to edit; to compile; to compose (texts, lists, programs)

   他负责把这本教材的章节重新编过一遍。 tā fùzé bǎ zhèběn jiàocái de zhāngjié chóngxīn biānguò yībiàn — He is responsible for reorganizing/editing the chapters of this textbook.

4. to fabricate; to make up (a story, an excuse)

   别编了，事情不是你说的那样。 bié biān le shìqíng búshì nǐ shuō de nàyàng — Stop making things up; it's not the way you described.
