绞 — jiǎo

1. to twist (strands into a thread); to ply; to wind together

   把两股麻绳绞在一起，才能更结实。 bǎ liǎnggǔ máshéng jiǎo zài yìqǐ cáinéng gèng jiēshí — Twist the two strands of hemp rope together so it will be stronger.

2. to entangle; to become knotted or caught up

   头发被风吹得全绞在一起，弄不开了。 tóufà bèi fēngchuī dé quán jiǎo zài yìqǐ nòng bùkāi le — My hair got all tangled by the wind and I can't undo it.

3. to wring (to twist to squeeze liquid out)

   洗完衣服后把水绞干再晾。 xǐwán yīfú hòu bǎ shuǐ jiǎo gàn zài liàng — After washing clothes, wring out the water before hanging them to dry.

4. to hang (by the neck); to execute by hanging

   古代罪犯有时会被绞死。 gǔdài zuìfàn yǒushí huì bèi jiǎosǐ — In ancient times criminals were sometimes executed by hanging.

5. to turn; to wind; to twist around

   把布条绞到另一端，这样更牢固。 bǎ bùtiáo jiǎo dào lìngyīduān zhèyàng gèng láogù — Twist the strip of cloth to the other end; this way it's firmer.

6. classifier for skeins or coils (of yarn, thread)

   她买了一绞麻绳，准备用来绑菜园的架子。 tā mǎi le yī jiǎo máshéng zhǔnbèi yònglái bǎng càiyuán de jiàzi — She bought a skein of hemp rope to tie up the garden trellis.
