给 — gěi

1. to give; to hand to

   我给你一本书。 wǒ gěi nǐ yī běnshū — I'll give you a book.

2. for; for the benefit of (marks beneficiary/recipient)

   这件礼物是给妈妈的。 zhèjiàn lǐwù shì gěi māmā de — This gift is for (my) mother.

3. to allow; to permit

   老师不给我们出去玩。 lǎoshī bù gěi wǒmen chūqùwán — The teacher won't let us go out to play.

4. to do something for someone (do sth for sb)

   你可以给我拿杯水吗？ nǐ kěyǐ gěi wǒ ná bēishuǐ ma — Could you get me a glass of water?

5. (grammatical) used like 被 to mark passive constructions in some dialects/colloquial speech

   他的钱包给小偷偷走了。 tā de qiánbāo gěi xiǎotōu tōuzǒu le — His wallet was stolen by a thief. (colloquial passive)

6. (grammatical) used like 把 in some colloquial constructions to highlight the object/action

   你给他把窗户关上吧。 nǐ gěi tā bǎ chuānghù guānshàng ba — Close the window for him. (colloquial ba-like use of gei)

7. sentence intensifier (colloquial)

   这歌给我听着真好！ zhègē gěi wǒ tīng zhe zhēnhǎo — This song really sounds great to me! (intensifier)

   公司给员工提供培训。 gōngsī gěi yuángōng tígōng péixùn — The company provides training for employees.
