结 — jiē

1. to bear; (of a plant) to produce fruit or seeds

   这棵苹果树今年结了很多果。 zhè kē píngguǒshù jīnnián jié le hěnduō guǒ — This apple tree bore a lot of fruit this year.

结 — jié

1. knot; tie (a fastening)

   把绳子打个结，别松开。 bǎ shéngzi dǎ gè jié bié sōngkāi — Tie a knot in the rope so it won't come loose.

2. sturdy; firm

   这张椅子结实，可以放心坐。 zhè zhāng yǐzi jiēshí kěyǐ fàngxīn zuò — This chair is sturdy; you can sit on it with confidence.

3. to tie; to bind; to fasten; to form a bond/relationship

   他们结了婚，开始共同生活。 tāmen jiélehūn kāishǐ gòngtóng shēnghuó — They got married and started living together.

4. to check out (of a hotel); to settle up and leave

   我们明天早上九点结账离店。 wǒmen míngtiān zǎoshàng jiǔdiǎn jiézhàng lí diàn — We'll check out and leave the hotel at 9 tomorrow morning.
