细 — xì

1. thin; slender (of a person or object)

   她的手很细，看起来很温柔。 tā de shǒu hěnxì kànqǐlái hěn wēnróu — Her hands are thin and look very gentle.

2. finely particulate; of small diameter (e.g., threads, grains)

   面粉磨得很细，做蛋糕更好吃。 miànfěn mó dé hěnxì zuò dàngāo gèng hǎochī — The flour is milled very fine, making the cake tastier.

3. thin and soft (texture; e.g., fabric, paper)

   这条围巾很细，戴着很舒服。 zhètiáo wéijīn hěnxì dài zhe hěn shūfú — This scarf is thin and very comfortable to wear.

4. fine; delicate; subtle (detail or workmanship)

   这幅画的笔触很细，充满层次感。 zhèfú huà de bǐchù hěnxì chōngmǎn céngcìgǎn — The brushwork in this painting is very fine and full of layers.

5. trifling; minor; of little importance

   别为这些细节争论了，重点是结果。 bié wèi zhèxiē xìjié zhēnglùn le zhòngdiǎn shì jiéguǒ — Don't argue over these trifling details; the focus is the result.

6. (of a sound) quiet; soft

   他说话的声音很细，需要靠近才听得见。 tā shuōhuà de shēngyīn hěnxì xūyào kàojìn cái tīngdejiàn — His voice is very soft; you need to lean in to hear him.

7. frugal; parsimonious

   他生活很细，不怎么花钱。 tā shēnghuó hěnxì bùzěnme huāqián — He lives frugally and doesn't spend much money.
