紧张 — jǐnzhāng

1. nervous; keyed up; tense; emotionally strained

   考试前我很紧张，手都在发抖。 kǎoshì qián wǒ hěn jǐnzhāng shǒu dōu zài fādǒu — I was very nervous before the exam; my hands were shaking.

2. intense; strained; marked by high tension (situation, atmosphere)

   会议气氛很紧张，大家都不敢发言。 huìyì qìfēn hěn jǐnzhāng dàjiā dōu bùgǎn fāyán — The meeting atmosphere was very tense; nobody dared to speak.

3. in short supply; scarce

   雨季导致粮食紧张，政府已经开始分发救济。 yǔjì dǎozhì liángshí jǐnzhāng zhèngfǔ yǐjīng kāishǐ fēnfā jiùjì — The rainy season has caused food shortages; the government has begun distributing relief.
