紧 — jǐn

1. tight (not loose)

   这件衣服太紧了，我穿不下。 zhèjiàn yīfú tàijǐn le wǒ chuānbùxià — This piece of clothing is too tight; I can't fit into it.

2. strict; stringent (rules, discipline)

   老师对学生要求很紧。 lǎoshī duì xuéshēng yāoqiú hěnjǐn — The teacher's requirements for students are very strict.

3. close at hand; near (in space or time)

   会议的日期很紧，大家要抓紧准备。 huìyì de rìqī hěnjǐn dàjiā yào zhuājǐn zhǔnbèi — The meeting date is near; everyone must hurry to prepare.

4. urgent; pressing

   情况很紧，我们需要马上采取行动。 qíngkuàng hěnjǐn wǒmen xūyào mǎshàng cǎiqǔxíngdòng — The situation is urgent; we need to act immediately.

5. tense; nervous (mental state)

   面试前他心情很紧，一晚没睡好。 miànshì qián tā xīnqíng hěnjǐn yīwǎn méi shuì hǎo — He felt very tense before the interview and didn't sleep well all night.

6. hard up; short of money

   这个月我手头有点紧，不能出去吃饭。 zhège yuè wǒ shǒutóu yǒudiǎn jǐn bùnéng chūqù chīfàn — I'm a bit short of money this month; I can't go out to eat.

7. to tighten; to make tight

   把螺丝拧紧一点。 bǎ luósī nǐngjǐn yìdiǎn — Tighten the screw a bit.
