筛 — shāi

1. sieve (bound form); a tool for sifting

   厨房里有一个筛，用来过面粉。 chúfáng lǐ yǒu yígè shāi yònglái guò miànfěn — There is a sieve in the kitchen used for sifting flour.

2. to sieve; to sift; to filter (physically passing through a sieve)

   把面粉过一下筛，别有结块。 bǎ miànfěn guò yīxià shāi bié yǒu jiékuài — Sift the flour through a sieve so there are no lumps.

3. to select or eliminate through selection; to screen (figurative: choose or filter out)

   我们需要筛选应聘者，挑出最合适的人。 wǒmen xūyào shāixuǎn yìngpìnzhě tiāochū zuìhéshì de rén — We need to screen candidates and pick the most suitable person.

4. to warm a pot of rice wine (by fire or hot water)

   过年时老人家还会把酒筛热了给大家喝。 guònián shí lǎorénjiā hái huì bǎjiǔ shāi rè le gěi dàjiā hē — At New Year elders would warm the wine by sieving it for everyone to drink.

5. to pour (wine or tea)

   主人把茶筛给客人，一壶两杯。 zhǔrén bǎ chá shāi gěi kèrén yī hú liǎngbēi — The host poured the tea for the guests, one pot and two cups.

6. (dialect) to strike (a gong)

   村里的鼓手一听号令就开始筛锣。 cūnlǐ de gǔshǒu yī tīng hàolìng jiù kāishǐ shāi luó — When the signal sounded, the village drummer began striking the gong (dialect usage).
