竖 — shù

1. to erect; to set up; to raise

   他们在广场上竖起了旗帜。 tā men zài guǎng chǎng shàng shù qǐ le qí zhì 。 — They erected a flag in the square.

2. vertical; upright; perpendicular

   把书立着放在书架上，保持竖直。 bǎ shū lì zhe fàng zài shū jià shàng ， bǎo chí shù zhí 。 — Put the book standing on the shelf, keep it vertical.

3. vertical stroke (one of the basic strokes in Chinese characters)

   汉字的‘十’字由两笔组成，一笔是竖。 hàn zì de ‘ shí ’ zì yóu liǎng bǐ zǔ chéng ， yī bǐ shì shù 。 — The character '十' is made of two strokes; one is a vertical stroke.
