窜 — cuàn

1. to flee; to run away

   罪犯在审讯中试图窜出审讯室逃跑。 zuìfàn zài shěnxùn zhōng shìtú cuànchū shěnxùn shì táopǎo — The criminal tried to flee the interrogation room during questioning.

2. to scuttle about; to dart (quick, irregular movements)

   小猫在桌子上窜来窜去，玩着一根线球。 xiǎomāo zài zhuōzi shàng cuàn lái cuàn qù wán zhe yīgēn xiàn qiú — The kitten darted around on the table, playing with a ball of string.

3. to exile; to banish (send someone away as punishment)

   古代有把犯人窜到边疆服劳役的做法。 gǔdài yǒu bǎ fànrén cuàn dào biānjiāng fúláoyì de zuòfǎ — In ancient times there was a practice of exiling criminals to the frontier for forced labor.

4. to amend, to tamper with; to alter (text or data)

   记者发现那份报告被人窜改过，数据不可信。 jìzhě fāxiàn nàfèn bàogào bèi rén cuàngǎi guò shùjù bùkě xìn — Reporters found that the report had been tampered with and the data was unreliable.
