突破 — tūpò

1. to break through (an obstacle, barrier, limit)

   球员一次次尝试突破对方的防线。 qiúyuán yīcìcì chángshì tūpò duìfāng de fángxiàn — The player tried again and again to break through the opponent's defense line.

2. to make a breakthrough (in research, technology, etc.)

   科研团队在癌症治疗上取得了重大突破。 kēyán tuánduì zài áizhèng zhìliáo shàng qǔdé le zhòngdàtūpò — The research team made a major breakthrough in cancer treatment.

3. to surmount (a difficulty or obstacle); to overcome

   他努力学习，终于突破了语言障碍。 tā nǔlìxuéxí zhōngyú tūpò le yǔyánzhàngài — He studied hard and finally overcame the language barrier.

4. (sports) to break through the opponent's defense; to make a breakthrough (in play)

   前锋在上半场一次漂亮的突破后打进了制胜一球。 qiánfēng zài shàngbànchǎng yīcì piàoliàng de tūpò hòu dǎjìn le zhìshèng yīqiú — After a beautiful breakthrough in the first half, the forward scored the winning goal.
