空 — kōng

1. empty; containing nothing

   抽屉是空的，什么都没有。 chōutì shì kōng de shénme dōu méiyǒu — The drawer is empty; there's nothing in it.

2. air; the sky; space above the ground

   晚上看着空中的星星很舒服。 wǎnshàng kànzhe kōngzhōng de xīngxīng hěn shūfú — It's pleasant to look at the stars in the sky at night.

3. in vain; futilely

   他努力了，但最后全都空了。 tā nǔlì le dàn zuìhòu quándōu kōng le — He tried hard, but in the end it was all in vain.

空 — kòng

1. to empty; to make vacant

   请把箱子里的东西空出来。 qǐng bǎ xiāngzi lǐ de dōngxī kòng chūlái — Please empty out the things in the box.

2. vacant; unoccupied

   那个职位目前还空着，欢迎申请。 nàge zhíwèi mùqián hái kōng zhe huānyíng shēnqǐng — That position is currently vacant; applications are welcome.

3. free time; leisure; spare time; an available opening

   下周我有空，可以一起吃饭。 xiàzhōu wǒ yǒukòng kěyǐ yìqǐ chīfàn — I'm free next week; we can have a meal together.
