禁忌 — jìnjì

1. taboo; something that is avoided for cultural, religious, or social reasons

   在这个家庭里，谈论工资是个禁忌。 zài zhège jiātíng lǐ tánlùn gōngzī shì gè jìnjì — In this family, talking about salaries is a taboo.

2. contraindication (medicine); a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment

   怀孕是服用这种药物的一个禁忌。 huáiyùn shì fúyòng zhèzhǒng yàowù de yígè jìnjì — Pregnancy is a contraindication for taking this medicine.

3. to abstain from; to avoid doing something (often for moral, cultural, or medical reasons)

   他禁忌吃辛辣的食物。 tā jìnjì chī xīnlà de shíwù — He abstains from eating spicy food.
