祭 — jì

1. to offer a sacrifice to (gods or ancestors); to perform rites of worship

   每年清明人们会去祭祖。 měinián qīngmíng rénmen huìqù jìzǔ — Every year at Qingming people go to offer sacrifices to their ancestors.

2. (classical/novel) to recite an incantation to activate a magic weapon; to wield (a magical item)

   小说中法师念咒祭动了神剑。 xiǎoshuō zhōng fǎshī niànzhòu jì dòng le shénjiàn — In the novel the sorcerer recited a spell and activated the divine sword.

3. (bound form) ceremony; festival; ritual observance (often found in compounds)

   中元祭是民间的传统祭典之一。 zhōngyuán jì shì mínjiān de chuántǒng jìdiǎn zhīyī — The Zhongyuan festival is one of the traditional folk ceremonies.
