硬 — yìng

1. hard; stiff; solid (physically firm)

   这块石头很硬，敲不开。 zhèkuài shítou hěnyìng qiāo bùkāi — This rock is very hard; it won't break when struck.

2. firm; strong; unyielding (character or position)

   在谈判中，他态度很硬，不愿让步。 zài tánpàn zhōng tā tàidù hěnyìng bù yuàn ràngbù — In the negotiations he was very firm and unwilling to concede.

3. resolutely; uncompromisingly

   他硬说自己没错，谁也说服不了他。 tā yìng shuō zìjǐ méicuò shuí yě shuōfú bùliǎo tā — He stubbornly insists he's not wrong; no one can convince him.

4. laboriously; with great difficulty

   他硬把那件旧衣服穿上，尽管不太合身。 tā yìng bǎ nàjiàn jiùyīfú chuān shàng jǐnguǎn bù tài héshēn — He forced himself to put on the old clothes, even though they didn't fit well.

5. good (of quality); able; capable (person)

   他是个硬汉，做事很可靠。 tā shì gè yìnghàn zuòshì hěn kěkào — He's a tough/able man; very reliable in his work.

6. (of food) filling; substantial

   今天饭桌上有几道硬菜，吃得很饱。 jīntiān fànzhuō shàngyǒu jǐdào yìng cài chī dé hěnbǎo — Today's table had several hearty main dishes; we ate our fill.
