砸 — zá

1. to smash; to crush (by hitting or dropping)

   他不小心把杯子砸碎了。 tā bùxiǎo xīn bǎ bēizi zásuì le — He accidentally smashed the cup.

2. to pound; to hammer (repeated heavy blows)

   工人用锤子把门钉砸进去了。 gōngrén yòng chuízi bǎ méndīng zá jìnqù le — The worker hammered the nail into the door.

3. to fail (an exam, a task); to flop

   他那次考试砸了，没及格。 tā nàcì kǎoshì zá le méi jígé — He failed that exam; didn't pass.

4. to muck up; to botch; to mess up an operation or plan

   我们把演出安排得不好，结果把节目砸了。 wǒmen bǎ yǎnchū ānpái dé bùhǎo jiéguǒ bǎ jiémù zá le — We mismanaged the show and ended up botching the performance.

5. to bungle (colloquial), to screw up through clumsiness

   别砸了，这件事交给我处理。 bié zá le zhèjiàn shì jiāogěi wǒ chǔlǐ — Don't mess it up; leave this to me.
