1. broken; damaged; worn out

   手机摔了，现在屏幕都破了。 shǒujī shuāi le xiànzài píngmù dōu pò le — My phone got dropped and now the screen is broken.

2. lousy; rotten (poor quality, colloquial)

   这家饭馆的菜太破了，别去了。 zhèjiā fànguǎn de cài tài pò le biéqùle — The food at that restaurant is terrible; don't go.

3. to break; to split; to cleave

   风吹破了窗户上的玻璃。 fēng chuīpò le chuānghùshàng de bōlí — The wind broke the glass on the window.

4. to get rid of; to destroy; to break with (an agreement, habit)

   为了健身，他破了多年抽烟的习惯。 wèile jiànshēn tā pò le duōnián chōuyān de xíguàn — To get healthier, he broke his years-long smoking habit.

5. to defeat; to overcome; (mil.) to capture (a city)
