省 — shěng

1. to save; to economize; to be frugal

   他每天都很省，买东西从不随便花钱。 tā měitiān dōu hěn shěng mǎi dōngxī cóng bù suíbiàn huāqián — He is very frugal every day; he never spends money casually when shopping.

2. to omit; to delete; to leave out

   这段话太长，可以省掉不必要的细节。 zhèduànhuà tàizhǎng kěyǐ shěngdiào bùbìyào de xìjié — This passage is too long; you can omit unnecessary details.

3. province; provincial capital

   他在外省工作，常常想念家乡的风景。 tā zài wàishěng gōngzuò chángcháng xiǎngniàn jiāxiāng de fēngjǐng — He works in another province and often misses the scenery of his hometown.

4. a ministry (of the Japanese government) — historical/administrative term

   日本的财务省负责管理国家财政。 rìběn de cáiwù shěng fùzéguǎnlǐ guójiā cáizhèng — Japan's Ministry of Finance (zaimu-shō) is responsible for managing the national budget.

省 — xǐng

1. (bound form) to scrutinize; to examine carefully; to reflect on one's conduct

   他常常反省自己的言行以便改进。 tā chángcháng fǎnxǐng zìjǐ de yánxíng yǐbiàn gǎijìn — He often reflects on his words and deeds in order to improve.

2. (bound form) to come to realize; to become aware

   听了老师的话，他才省悟过来错误在哪里。 tīng le lǎoshī dehuà tā cái xǐngwù guòlái cuòwù zài nǎlǐ — After hearing the teacher, he finally realized where his mistake was.

3. (bound form) to pay a visit (to one's parents or elders)

   春节时我们都会去省亲，看望父母和长辈。 chūnjié shí wǒmen dū huìqù xǐngqīn kànwàng fùmǔ hé zhǎngbèi — During Spring Festival we all visit our parents and elders.
