直 — zhí

1. (Zhi, legendary figure) Zhi, fifth of the Flame Emperors

   古书上记载着一位叫直的人物。 gǔshū shàng jìzǎi zhe yīwèi jiào zhí de rénwù — The ancient texts record a figure named Zhi.

2. straight; not curved; upright

   请把这根木棍放直。 qǐng bǎ zhègēn mùgùn fàng zhí — Please put this stick straight.

3. to straighten; to make straight

   他把头发梳直了。 tā bǎ tóufā shū zhí le — He straightened his hair.

4. fair and reasonable; just

   他为人很直，从不偏袒任何一方。 tā wéi rén hěnzhí cóng bùpiān tǎn rènhéyīfāng — He is a fair person and never takes sides.

5. frank; straightforward; candid

   他说话很直，大家都知道他的意思。 tā shuōhuà hěnzhí dàjiā dōu zhīdào tā de yìsi — He speaks very frankly; everyone knows what he means.

6. (grammatical) indicates continuing motion or action; used after a verb

   他直走了过去，没跟我打招呼。 tā zhí zǒu le guòqù méi gēn wǒ dǎzhāohū — He walked straight past without greeting me.

7. vertical; perpendicular; oriented up–down

   这条线必须保持直。 zhètiáo xiàn bìxū bǎochí zhí — This line must be kept vertical/straight.

8. vertical downward stroke in Chinese characters (calligraphy term)

   写汉字时，直是基本笔画之一。 xiě hànzì shí zhí shì jīběn bǐhuà zhīyī — When writing Chinese characters, the vertical stroke (zhi) is one basic stroke.
