痛 — tòng

1. ache; to feel physical pain

   我的头很痛，不能集中注意力。 wǒ de tóu hěn tòng bùnéng jízhōng zhùyìlì — My head really hurts; I can't concentrate.

2. sorrow; emotional pain; grief

   听到母亲去世的消息，他心里很痛。 tīngdào mǔqīn qùshì de xiāoxī tā xīnlǐ hěn tòng — When he heard his mother had died, he felt great pain in his heart.

3. thoroughly; deeply (used as an intensifier in compounds)

   他痛改前非，从此重新做人。 tā tònggǎiqiánfēi cóngcǐ chóngxīnzuòrén — He thoroughly corrected his past mistakes and started his life anew.
