留下 — liúxià

1. to leave (something) behind

   他匆忙离开，忘了把钥匙留下。 tā cōngmáng líkāi wàng le bǎ yàoshi liúxià — He left in a hurry and forgot to leave the keys behind.

2. to stay behind; to remain (in a place)

   下课后他留下来问老师问题。 xiàkèhòu tā liúxiàlái wèn lǎoshī wèntí — After class he stayed behind to ask the teacher questions.

3. to keep; to retain (something)

   老板让我留下这份文件作为记录。 lǎobǎn ràng wǒ liúxià zhèfèn wénjiàn zuòwéi jìlù — The boss told me to keep this document as a record.

4. not to let (someone) go; to detain or persuade someone to stay

   她哭着要求他留下别走。 tā kū zhe yāoqiú tā liúxià bié zǒu — She cried and begged him to stay, not to leave.
