1. lightning

   天空中划过一道电。 tiānkōng zhōng huáguò yīdào diàn — A flash of lightning streaked across the sky.

2. electricity; electrical power

   停电了，屋里没有电。 tíngdiàn le wūlǐ méiyǒu diàn — The power went out; there's no electricity in the house.

3. electric (bound form, used in compounds)

   电动车是一种常见的交通工具。 diàndòngchē shì yīzhǒng chángjiàn de jiāotōnggōngjù — An electric bike is a common means of transport.

4. to get (or give) an electric shock

   他修理电器时被电了一下，幸好没事。 tā xiūlǐ diànqì shí bèi diàn le yīxià xìnghǎo méishì — He got an electric shock while fixing the appliance; fortunately he's okay.

5. phone call or telegram (colloquial/archaic)

   他给家里发了一封电报平安。 tā gěi jiālǐ fā le yīfēng diànbào píngān — He sent a telegram home reporting that he was safe.

6. to send via telephone or telegram

   请尽快电告会议结果。 qǐng jǐnkuài diàngào huìyì jiéguǒ — Please wire the meeting results as soon as possible.
