用 — yòng

1. to use; to employ

   请你用我的电脑。 qǐng nǐ yòng wǒ de diànnǎo — Please use my computer.

2. (coverb) with; using (indicates means)

   他用筷子吃饭。 tāyòng kuàizi chīfàn — He eats with chopsticks.

3. to need; to have to (usually used in negatives or questions)

   你不用着急。 nǐ bùyòng zháojí — You don't need to worry.

4. usefulness; utility

   这把工具的用处很大。 zhè bǎ gōngjù de yòngchǔ hěndà — This tool has great usefulness.

5. (bound form) expense; outlay

   每月开销中，吃饭的用最多。 měiyuè kāixiāo zhōng chīfàn de yòng zuìduō — Among monthly expenses, food costs are the highest.

6. (courteous) to eat; to drink (polite verb for dining)

   请慢慢用，不必着急。 qǐng mànmàn yòng bùbì zháojí — Please take your time eating; there is no need to hurry.

7. (literary) hence; therefore

   事已至此，用不得不另作打算。 shìyǐzhìcǐ yòng bùdé bù lìng zuò dǎsuàn — Things being so, we have no choice but to make other plans.
