生 — shēng

1. to be born

   他在北京出生，但在那里没呆多久就又回到家乡了。 tā zài běijīng chūshēng dàn zài nàlǐ méi dāi duōjiǔ jiù yòu huídào jiāxiāng le — He was born in Beijing, but didn't stay there long before returning to his hometown.

2. to give birth

   她上个月生了一个健康的男孩。 tā shànggèyuè shēng le yígè jiànkāng de nánhái — She gave birth to a healthy baby boy last month.

3. life; living

   他对生活有很多自己的看法。 tā duì shēnghuó yǒu hěnduō zìjǐ de kànfǎ — He has many personal views about life.

4. to grow; to live; to give rise to

   这种植物在潮湿环境中生得很快。 zhèzhòng zhíwù zài cháoshī huánjìng zhōng shēngdé hěnkuài — This plant grows quickly in a humid environment.

5. raw; uncooked

   不要吃生的海鲜，除非你确定很新鲜。 búyào chī shēng de hǎixiān chúfēi nǐ quèdìng hěn xīnxiān — Don't eat raw seafood unless you're sure it's very fresh.

6. student (colloquial)

   在古代，士子常称自己为生。 zài gǔdài shìzi cháng chēng zìjǐ wéishēng — In ancient times, scholars often referred to themselves as 'sheng' (students).
