1. member of a council; councilor

   他被选为学校理事。 tā bèixuǎnwèi xuéxiào lǐshì — He was elected as a school council member.

2. (literary) to take care of matters; to manage affairs

   父亲不在家时，他帮母亲理事。 fùqīn bùzài jiā shí tā bāng mǔqīn lǐshì — When his father was away, he helped his mother manage affairs.
