献 — xiàn

1. to offer; to present (something to someone)

   他把奖品献给了学校。 tā bǎ jiǎngpǐn xiàngěi le xuéxiào — He presented the prize to the school.

2. to donate (e.g., money, blood)

   他每年都会献血一次。 tā měinián dū huì xiànxiě yīcì — He donates blood once every year.

3. to dedicate (oneself or something); to devote

   她把一生献给了教育事业。 tā bǎ yīshēng xiàngěi le jiàoyù shìyè — She devoted her life to education.

4. to show or put on display (often used in set phrases)

   别在大家面前献丑了。 bié zài dàjiā miànqián xiànchǒu le — Don't embarrass yourself in front of everyone.

5. a worthy person (archaic/old use)

   朝廷召集天下贤献共商国事。 cháotíng zhàojí tiānxià xián xiàn gòngshāngguóshì — The court summoned the worthies of the realm to discuss state affairs.
