1. top scorer (historically in the Imperial examinations); also used for the highest scorer in modern entrance exams

   他今年高考考了状元，全家都很高兴。 tā jīnnián gāokǎo kǎo le zhuàngyuán quánjiā dōu hěn gāoxìng — He was the top scorer in this year's college entrance exam; the whole family is very happy.

2. (fig.) the most outstanding or brilliantly talented person in a field
