犯规 — fànguī

1. to break the rules; to commit a foul (in sports)

   他在比赛中犯规，被裁判罚下场。 tā zài bǐsài zhōng fànguī bèi cáipàn fáxiàchǎng — He committed a foul during the match and was sent off by the referee.

2. an illegality; a foul (an act that breaks the rules)

   裁判吹哨示意这是一次犯规。 cáipàn chuīshào shìyì zhè shì yīcì fànguī — The referee blew the whistle to indicate that this was a foul.
