熟 — shú

  1. ripe; mature (fruit, crops); ready

    这些苹果已经熟了，可以吃了。 zhèxiē píngguǒ yǐjīng shú le kěyǐ chī le — These apples are already ripe; you can eat them.

  2. thoroughly cooked; done (food)

    这块肉还没熟，你得再煮一会儿。 zhèkuài ròu hái méi shú nǐ dé zài zhǔ yīhuìer — This piece of meat isn't cooked through yet; you need to boil it longer.

  3. familiar; acquainted (with someone or something)

    他对这座城市很熟，能带我们四处参观。 tā duì zhè zuò chéngshì hěnshú néngdài wǒmen sìchù cānguān — He is very familiar with this city and can show us around.

  4. experienced; skilled; practiced

    他是个很熟练的工人，工作速度又快又好。 tā shì gè hěn shúliàn de gōngrén gōngzuò sùdù yòukuàiyòuhǎo — He's a very skilled worker; his work is fast and good.

  5. deep; profound (sleep, feeling)

    他一睡着就睡得很熟，谁也叫不醒他。 tā yī shuìzháo jiù shuì dé hěnshú shuí yě jiào bùxǐng tā — Once he falls asleep he sleeps very deeply; nobody can wake him.

  6. to become熟 (to ripen, to cook thoroughly); to be familiarized with (in compounds)

    经过几个月，茶叶慢慢熟了，口感变得更醇。 jīngguò jǐgè yuè cháyè mànmàn shú le kǒugǎn biàndé gèng chún — After several months the tea gradually ripened; the taste became mellower.
