熏 — xūn

1. to smoke; to fumigate (e.g., preserve or treat by exposing to smoke)

   用桧木熏鱼可以增加风味并延长保存时间。 yòng guìmù xūnyú kěyǐ zēngjiā fēngwèi bìng yáncháng bǎocún shíjiān — Smoking fish with cypress wood can add flavor and extend its shelf life.

2. to fumigate or smoke in order to drive out insects or disinfect

   春季要对蜂箱熏烟，防止害虫滋生。 chūnjì yào duì fēngxiāng xūnyān fángzhǐ hàichóng zīshēng — In spring you should fumigate the beehives to prevent pests from breeding.

3. to assail the nostrils; to (cause) a strong smell to affect someone

   厨房里油烟熏得我直咳嗽。 chúfáng lǐ yóu yānxūn dé wǒ zhí késòu — The kitchen smoke made me cough nonstop.

4. to perfume; to scent lightly

   她用花瓣熏衣柜，使衣物带有淡淡花香。 tā yòng huābàn xūn yīguì shǐ yīwù dàiyǒu dàndàn huāxiāng — She scented the wardrobe with flower petals so the clothes had a faint floral scent.
