烧 — shāo

1. to burn; set on fire; to scorch

   不要把纸丢进火里烧，太危险了。 búyào bǎ zhǐ diū jìn huǒlǐ shāo tài wēixiǎn le — Don't throw the paper into the fire to burn; it's too dangerous.

2. to cook; to stew; to bake; to roast; to heat (food); to boil (water, tea)

   妈妈在厨房烧了一锅鱼汤，香气飘满了整栋楼。 māmā zài chúfáng shāo le yī guō yútāng xiāngqì piāo mǎn le zhěngdòng lóu — Mom cooked a pot of fish soup in the kitchen; the aroma filled the whole building.

3. to have a fever; to run a temperature

   他昨天晚上烧了，今天没去上班。 tā zuótiānwǎnshàng shāo le jīntiān méiqù shàngbān — He had a fever last night, so he didn't go to work today.

4. (colloquial) to let things go to one's head; to be carried away (by success, alcohol, etc.)

   取得点小成绩就别烧得不知道自己姓什么。 qǔdé diǎn xiǎo chéngjì jiù bié shāodé bùzhī dào zìjǐ xìng shénme — Don't let a little success go to your head.
