烂 — làn

1. soft; mushy; well-cooked and soft (of food)

   这汤煮得很烂，连菜都能用筷子夹断。 zhè tāng zhǔ dé hěnlàn lián cài dōu néngyòng kuàizi jiāduàn — This soup is cooked until very soft; you can break the vegetables with chopsticks.

2. to rot; to decompose

   这些水果放久了都烂了，要扔掉。 zhèxiē shuǐguǒ fàng jiǔ le dōu làn le yào rēngdiào — These fruits have been left too long and have rotted; they need to be thrown away.

3. rotten; decayed; bad (quality)

   那部手机性能太烂了，我要换一个新的。 nà bùshǒujī xìngnéng tàilàn le wǒ yào huàn yígè xīn de — That phone performs terribly; I want to replace it with a new one.

4. worn out; shabby; threadbare (clothes, items)

   这件外套洗了好多年了，袖口都烂了。 zhèjiàn wàitào xǐ le hǎoduōnián le xiùkǒu dōu làn le — This coat has been washed for many years; the cuffs are all worn out.

5. chaotic; messy; in a terrible state

   他把房间弄得乱七八糟，根本找不到东西。 tā bǎ fángjiān nòng dé luànqībāzāo gēnběn zhǎo búdào dōngxī — He made the room a complete mess; you can't find anything at all.

6. utterly; completely; thoroughly (intensifier, often colloquial)

   他把事情搞烂了，一个计划都没成功。 tā bǎ shìqíng gǎo làn le yígè jìhuà dōu méi chénggōng — He messed things up completely; not a single plan succeeded.

7. crappy; lousy; of poor quality (colloquial, derogatory)

   这个餐馆的味道太烂了，我再也不来。 zhège cānguǎn de wèidào tàilàn le wǒ zàiyě bùlái — The food at this restaurant is awful; I won't come again.
