1. to ignite; to light a fire

   他用火柴点火。 tāyòng huǒchái diǎnhuǒ — He lit a fire with a match.

2. to start an engine (to crank/ignite a vehicle)

   汽车发动不了，试着点火几次。 qìchē fādòng bùliǎo shì zhe diǎnhuǒ jǐcì — The car won't start; try turning the ignition a few times.

3. ignition (system); the act or mechanism of igniting

   点火系统出现故障，需要检修。 diǎnhuǒ xìtǒng chūxiàn gùzhàng xūyào jiǎnxiū — The ignition system failed and needs repair.

4. fig. to stir up trouble; to provoke discord

   他在同事之间点火，造成了很多矛盾。 tā zài tóngshì zhījiān diǎnhuǒ zàochéng le hěnduō máodùn — He stirred up trouble among colleagues and caused many conflicts.
