1. to call the roll; to take attendance

   老师一进教室就点名。 lǎoshī yī jìn jiàoshì jiù diǎnmíng — The teacher called the roll as soon as they entered the classroom.

2. to mention someone by name (e.g. to single them out for praise or criticism)

   经理在会议上点名表扬了这个项目的负责人。 jīnglǐ zài huìyì shàng diǎnmíng biǎoyáng le zhège xiàngmù dì fùzérén — The manager singled out the project leader for praise at the meeting.
